A
District National Agriculture Census Management Team has been inaugurated in
the Tano South District Capital of Bechem.
The
three member committee has been put in place to oversee the successful
implementation of a programme of a collaborative effort of the Ghana
Statistical Service and the Ministry of Agriculture implementing the Ghana
Census of Agricultural with the view to allow for the collection, processing,
publication and dissemination of information on the structure of agriculture
development in the county.
The Tano
South District Chief Executive Hon. Bukari Zakari Anaba in an opening address
said we need to thank our God for this opportunity to inaugurate the District
Management Team of the Ghana Census of Agriculture in the Tano South District.
He said
we are all aware that the overall objective of the census of Agriculture is to
improve Agricultural base with the view of strengthening our National
Agriculture Statistics.
Hon.
Anaba said the District Management team would do the their best in the area of
Data collection to ensure quality statistical information on the structure of
agriculture and the state of development of the rural areas for the benefit
of policy makers and other users such
as researchers and academia.
Hon.
Anaba said he wished that during the implementation process, the Traditional
Council led by the Sompahene, Heads of Department and other committee members
would be called upon to assist in one way or the other and hoped they would not
hesitate to do so for the smooth implementation of the programme and assured
the gathering that the District Assembly would play its key role in the
implementation of the programme.
The National
coordinator for Census of Agriculture Mr. Francis Dzah in his inaugural address said
a census of Agriculture is a statistical operation covering the whole country
and allows for the collection, processing, publishing and dissemination of
information in the structure of Agriculture and the state of development of the
rural areas.
He said
the overall objective of the census of Agriculture is to produce and
disseminate complete and reliable agricultural data to meet the needs of policy
makers and other users to support informed decision making and for monitoring
development programmes aimed at further developing agriculture and the rural areas.
Census
of Agriculture he said would specifically provide information on the rural
sector and the structure of agriculture which include the number of holders and
sizes of holdings and their distribution across the country and also provide an up to date sampling frame and
establish solid system for regular production and dissemination of annual
Agriculture statistics through survey in order to strengthen the National
Agriculture Statistics system and improve upon the availability of Agricultural
data and said there are several benefits that will be derived from the
implementation of the census of Agriculture in Ghana.
Mr. Francis
Dzah informed the gathering that the
census of Agriculture project which started in 2013 with preparatory activities
would be rolled out over a four year period
and would be implemented in four phases in line with the “Modular
Approach” recommended by FAO for the 2010 round of world census of Agriculture.
The
Sompahene of the Bechem Traditional Area Nana Fosu Darkwa who chaired the
function thanked all for honoring the invitation and called for their maximum
support for the implementation of the programme in the Tano South District to
make it a great success.
