TRUCK BURNS AT BECHEM JUNCTION

An articulator truck fully loaded with cement caught fire at Bechem Junction in the Tano South District of the Brong Ahafo Region on Sunday 23rd August, 2009 at about 2:30pm.

The driver of the truck who

narrowly escaped death said his attention was drawn by traders who were selling along the road side where he intended parking that fire and smoke where coming out from his truck. He immediately parked by the roadside to check and saw that what the traders had said was really true, he said he immediately contacted the Tepa fire station since he could not stand the might of the fire as all efforts made to put the fire off proved futile.

“Drivers should be advised to keep fire extinguishers in their vehicle so that in event of any fires it could easily be used as a first step to put out the fire.” these were the exact words of Station Officer O. T. Amoako of the Tepa Fire Service and urged the police MTTU to arrest and persecute recalcitrant drivers who do not keep fire extinguishers in their vehicles.

He said drivers should maintain their vehicles regularly as the truck that caught fire was due to an electric fault. He therefore urged the public to keep the telephone/contact number of the nearest Fire Station so that they could promptly be contacted in case of any eventuality.

On his part Inspector Acheampong of the Tano South District Police advised drivers to obey road traffic regulations and said drivers should practice the culture of maintenance and avoid overloading of vehicles so that disasters like what happened do not occur. He expressed that it is high time government rid our streets of all outmoded and over aged vehicles and advised that the burnt truck should be towed from were it caught fire since it could also lead to another accident.
