The
Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Hon. Edwin Nii Lante
Vanderpuye has paid a one day working visit to the Tano Sotuh District of the
Brong Ahafo Region to interact with Nananoom, District Assembly Staff and
Security Agencies on the way forward for the September 2015 version of the
National Sanitation Day to be celebrated in the Brong Ahafo Region.
At
an interaction by the Minister with the District Assembly Staff, the Tano South
District Chief Executive, Hon. Bukari Zakari Anaba in an introductory speech
said, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development has set aside
every first Saturday of every month as a National Sanitation Day and to be
celebrated as such with clean up exercise Nationwide.
Hon.
Anaba said it is imperative for the Assembly Staff to lead the crusade of the
programme so as to make others emulate their shining example and participate in
the exercise when the day falls.
In
a short address at a mini durbar with the Assembly Staff, the Hon. Deputy
Minister of Local Government and Rural Development said there is a code of
conduct for the Civil Service and must be adhered to as such in the course of
their duties. He urged the workers to eschew from politics in the performance
of their work and give off their best as Civil Servants and also contribute
their quota towards the development of the District in which they find
themselves.
Hon.
Lante urged the revenue collectors of the Assembly to adopt positive ways of
reacting with the tax payers to enable them honour their obligations and also
urged those who approach people with bad behavior to have attitudinal change
that will meet the hearts of people they come in contact with so as to
encourage them to pay their taxes.
On
anonymous letters, the Deputy Minister gave a note of warning to those who indulge
in such practices to refrain from the practice as such acts tender to put
mistrust amongst the workers. Since a united front brings about unity and
harmony at the workplace leading to productivity and urged the Assembly Staff
to always participate in the National Sanitation Day exercise.
At
a separate mini durbars with the Omanhene of Bechem and his sub-chiefs and the
chiefs of Techimantia at their respective palaces, Hon. Lante explained the
rationale behind the introduction of the National Sanitation Day and said the
day is observed as a day set aside for clean- up exercises country wide and
urged all stakeholders to observe the day as such as it will go a long way to
improve the sanitation of their environment.
The
Member of Parliament for the Tano South Constituency, Hon. Hannah Louisa Bisiw
in a short speech used the occasion to inform the chiefs of the communities
that the Bechem and Techimantia markets have been awarded on contract for
rehabilitation works and the projects would be financed through her share of
the common funds and urged the Ministry of Local Government to adopt policy
measures which will ban deficating around our environment.
Hon.
Bisiw called on queen mothers whom she said play a significant role in the
development of the country to give their maximum support to the National
Sanitation Day exercise by mobilizing women in their numbers to participate in
the exercise when the day falls.
Speaking
on behalf of the chiefs at Bechem, Nana Fosu Gyeabour Akoto ll, the Omanhene of
Bechem welcomed the Minister, MP, DCE and their entourage and said Democracy is
a good practice but Ghana’s democracy is pre-mature because, it has made many
Ghanaians not to honour certain obligation which hither to was not the case and
cited communal labour as a shining example and said many people these days fail
to attend communal labour because of democracy.
Nana
Fosu Gyeabour Akoto ll pleaded with the Assembly to enforce a by-law which will
make it mandatory for everybody to participate in the National Sanitation Day
exercise and promised that he and his elders would do all that it takes to make
the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise a success.
