TANO SOUTH NCCE HOLD DURBAR TO EXPLAIN CONSTITUTION

The Tano South District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education has held a durbar for staff of the Tano South District Assembly and other departments in the District to sensitize them on the objectives of the 1992 constitution.

Addressing the gathering, the Tano South District Director of the Commission, Ms. Cynthia Anima Boadu said as human beings we have natural rights which God has given us by creation, this she said makes us to function as human beings. So in exercising this natural and inalienable right Ghana wants to achieve the following objective as stated in the preamble of the constitution.

v To establish a framework of government which shall secure for ourselves and posterity the blessing of liberty, equality of opportunity and prosperity for all.

Mrs. Boadu said the principle to achieve this objective is seen in article 35 (Political objective) under the directive principle of state policy.

v In a spirit of friendship and peace with all peoples of the world

Ms. Boadu said the constitution acknowledges the individual differences both within the country and the outside world in terms of culture, tribe, religion, beliefs, race, colour etc.

She said there is no way all persons could become equal but the least we could do as a people is to have the spirit of friendship which could help us leave in peace with each other. There is therefore the need for national integration to ensure the development of our dear nation

Mrs. Boadu said the solemn declaration and affirmation of our commitment to freedom, justice, probity and accountability are Ghana’s core values which the citizenry must be very serious with. According to the directive principles of state policy under social objectives, the state she said shall endeavour the secure and protect a social order on the ideals and principles of freedom, equality, justice, probity and accountability as enshrined in chapter 5 of the constitution.

On universal Adult Sufferage, Ms. Boadu said with the framework of government, Ghana has chosen a constitutional Multi-party democracy with a decentralized system of governance in the local government structure and because of this democracy where the majority view is upheld, there is the need for elections and formation of political parties.

She said the universal adult sufferage signifies that only adults who are of sound mind could vote and each person has only one voting right.

The constitution she said gives the supremacy or the sovereignty of this country to the people according to article 35 (1) b “it says sovereignty resides in the people of Ghana from who government derives all its powers and authority through this constitution”, this she said people in authority should be prepared to render accounts of their stewardship and to subject themselves to the core values of the state.

Recounting on the Rule of Law Ms. Boadu said the state is to be governed in accordance with the laid down rules and regulations as prescribed by the constitution and the law of Ghana. Mrs. Boadu concluded her presentation by saying that generally, for Ghana to attain stability, there is the need for all of us to get involved in protecting and preserving the fundamental Human Rights and freedom and foster a spirit of loyalty to Ghana which overrides sectional, ethic and other loyalties and get united to ensure that the constitution becomes a living document for our nations development and peace.
